Luke 1:26-37

26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.

32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

I Abhor Myself

Have you read the Book of Job?  I’ve read it dozens of times, and the part that always stands out to me is this –

Job 42:5-6

5 I have heard of Thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth Thee.  

6 Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

Day after day, I fail Him, and day after day, He shows indescribable mercy.  The secret pride, the self complacency, the surreptitious coveting, the sluggishness, O God – please – please –  help me.  And He does.  Again and again and again.  Again and again when I don’t deserve it.  Again and again when I forget Him and allow the cares of this world to consume me.  There He is, so gracious, so merciful, so longsuffering. 

How can He love me – still.  He is so wonderful, my puny vocabulary is insufficient to praise Him.  What can I do, this horrible sinner, but give His own perfect Words back to Him?

Psalm 47:1-6

47 O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

2 For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.

3 He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.

4 He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

5 God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

6 Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

1 John 4:7

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

There are four definitions of God in the Bible, which reveal His nature.  Since God can not be defined – the definitions are insufficient.  But, in His infinite mercy, God has given us these definitions, to help us, in our human frailty, to see Him better – though we are limited by our flesh.  The Words of the Bible throw “light” on His nature.

THE FOUR DEFINITIONS OF GOD FROM THE BIBLE:

  • God is love.  This is the nature of God in His divine compassion.  1 John 4:8 – He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
  • God is light.  This is the nature of God in His divine character – in Him there is no darkness.   1 John 1:5 – This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.
  • God is a consuming fire.  This is the nature of God in His divine holiness.  Heb. 12:29 –  For our God is a consuming fire.
  • God is a spirit.  This is the nature of God in His divine essence.  John 4:24 – God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

These attributes of God reveal His nature.  His attributes should not be thought of as abstract, such as the New Age does.  They are vital mediums through which His holy nature is unveiled – ascribed only to Him – such as:

  1.  Life itself is ascribed to God.  John 5:26 – For as the Father hath life in Himself; so hath He given to the Son to have life in Himself
  2. His omniscience – all knowledge is ascribed to God.  Ps. 147:5 – Great is our Lord, and of great power: His understanding is infinite.
  3. His omnipotence – all power is ascribed to God.  Rev. 19:6 – And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
  4. His omnipresence – filling the universe with His presence is ascribed to God – He is everywhere present at once.  Ps. 139:7 – Whither shall I go from Thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy presence?

God is everywhere present – but He is not “in everything.”  If God were in everything, then it would be perfectly acceptable to worship your kitchen table!  God is a spirit being.  He is not your co-pilot, buddy, the “big guy,” or “the man upstairs.”
