Friday Proverb โ€“ Words Can Feed Souls

pharisee and the publican

Proverbs 10:20-21

20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver:the heart of the wicked is little worth.

21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Hold Your Tongue!

Proverbs 10:18-19

gossiping

Wow!  Hiding hatred with lying lips. . .  how awful.  But itโ€™s all too true.  We comfort ourselves by sugar coating what we are doing, thinking we are not hurting anyone, but it puts us in the category of fool no matter what the reason.  Cutting up someoneโ€™s appearance, children, marriage โ€“ whatever โ€“ is nothing more than slander.  If itโ€™s not something you can say directly to the person โ€“ then  do not say it!  This includes tearing apart the pastorโ€™s sermon in the car on the way home from church.  Repeating something youโ€™ve heard is a dangerous and shameful practice.  So is embellishing and exaggerating something that may be true in order to make it more interesting to your listeners.

talk too much

Did you realize that the more you talk, there is more chance of you saying something wrong?  The odds are against you.  Those who run-off at the mouth, are notorious for putting their foot in that same mouth.  Even when you are not talking about yourself (which most talkers do) you are still feeding your ego, by holding your listener(s)  hostage.  Parents โ€“ this includes lecturing of your children or spouse.  Less is more in this case, and in every case.  The longer your spiel โ€“ the greater chance you will sin, and sin big, during the overflow.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Sowing and Reaping in Righteousness

Hymn Story

All People That on Earth Do Dwell

Psalm 100ย

ย Make a joyful noise unto theย Lord, all ye lands.

2ย Serve theย Lordย with gladness: come before His presence with singing.

3ย Know ye that theย Lordย He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

4ย Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.

5ย For theย Lordย is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations.

p.s.  I post this as part of my continuous effort to point up the dangers of CCM, and hope and pray that Godโ€™s people will wake up to the serpent in the singing.  Can you see what is being lost as the old hymns are cast aside for simple lyrics and rhythmic melodies?  CCM  is now firmly in IFB churches everywhere.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Pride is Followed by Shame

2ย When pride cometh, then cometh shame:ย

but with the lowly is wisdom.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Speak Softly and Carry a Big Bible!

fish and wisdom

Proverbs 10:31-32

31ย The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

Recalling that only those who are under the Blood of Christ are considered โ€œjustโ€ by God โ€“ it does not bode well for those who have a froward tongue!

adjective: froward

  1. (of a person) difficult to deal with; contrary.

In point of fact โ€“ our blessed Redeemer made mention of this very thing, while He was here in the flesh:

Matthew 12:36

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

32ย The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

How do we know what is โ€œacceptable?โ€  By reading, studying, and memorizing the Word of God.  Being a Christian does not automatically cause you to speak with wisdom!  This kind of righteousness comes only with having the mind of Christ, and making His thoughts and Words a part of you.  And to prove that our own words can not count as wisdom, we look to our Savior once again, and see how He responded to the Devil during the temptation.

Matthew 4:3-10

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Notice that the Lord ONLY used Scripture to respond to the Devil.  This is especially important for those Christians who somehow think the Old Testament no longer has meaning or importance to the Church!  If the Living Christ thought it was important enough to quote โ€“ how are Christians confident in not doing so as well?  Are we responding to temptation with our own logic and reason?  Are we foolish enough to think that our own resources can outfox the Fox?  The Devil?  The Tempter?  This one thing โ€“ failing to use the Word of God against temptation โ€“ is the greatest weakness of the Church.

Hint for Home Schoolers – Saturdays

Saturday is the day where many home schools “fill in the gap.” That is – get to the stuff not compatible with the ordinary school week. I stress here – I am only sharing with you what worked for our family. Every family is different, with unique needs and interests.

And – the horror of it all – Saturday afternoon is  the best time for “practice driving” with teenagers. [God help you]

Recipe for cherry-apple pie

  • pie crust for double crust, 9 ” pie
  • 1/4 tsp. almond extract
  • 3 lbs. peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 21 oz.ย  can cherry pie filling
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Place baking sheet in center oven rack (I line mine with foil.)  Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Prepare homemade or store bought pie  crust, adding the almond extract.  If your kitchen is warm, divide the dough into two, one slightly larger than the other, flatten into disks and store in the fridge.

Spray 9″ deep dish pie pan with cooking spray.  In large bowl, toss apples with sugar and cinnamon.  (I use a mechanical apple peeler – a truly wonderful doo-dad!)  Stir in pie filling.  On floured surface, roll out larger dough disk into 12 ” circle, and fit into pan.

Spoon the fruit mixture into pie shell.  Roll out the remaining dough into 11″ circle and fit over pie, or cut into strips and weave lattices.  Cut slits for steam to escape if using solid top crust.  Seal, trim, and crimp edges, using ice water as “glue,” if needed.  Lightly brush crust with beaten egg.

Bake on hot baking sheet for about 1 hour, 15 minutes.  After the first 20 minutes, I always rotate the pie, and then tent it loosely with foil for the remainder of baking time.

I do not add any “thickeners,” such as flour or cornstarch to this recipe, because the canned cherry pie filling usually does the trick.  But brands vary!  I use Comstock, which is very dense.    If you are concerned about too runny pie filling – don’t add more than a tablespoon or two to the filling, or it might get gluey in texture.  Also , do not attempt to substitute another apple for Granny Smiths in this recipe, or else it will be too sweet.  It is very important that you set this pie on a hot baking sheet at the start of the baking time – or the center will not bake!  Not only that -it  helps keep your oven cleaner.  This type of fruit pie is notorious for bubbling over.   Happy baking – but a warning – if your spouse is a fruit pie lover, you may find yourself making this one a lot!

Friday Proverb โ€“ Holding the Line

The way of theย Lordย is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

Once again, the Proverbs make a clear demarcation between the saved and the lost.  The pagan world is stymied when Christians repeatedly stand tall in the face of adversity.  They would prefer, if when faced with calamity, that we collapse and fall into the abyss of sinful behaviors that they are mired in.  But โ€“ the Proverb states that the Lord is our strength.  We do not need to resort to the worldโ€™s accepted methods โ€“ we have the Word of God.  Nothing more is required to see us through lifeโ€™s darkest hours.

The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

Thatโ€™s right all you Mother Earth worshipers, you do NOT inherit the earth.  No matter how much you do to โ€œsave the planet,โ€ it wonโ€™t help โ€“ because itโ€™s not yours to save.  The earth is the Lordโ€™s, and everything in it โ€“ and He will give it to whom He chooses.  It will not be given to the unrepentant, that is a fact.

Revelation 21:6-8

6ย And He said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

7ย He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

8ย But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Friday Proverb โ€“ The Wicked Fear Death

Isaiah 65:11-17

Friday Proverb โ€“ What Do You Trust In?

ย The rich manโ€™s wealth is his strong city:

destruction of city

This image applies to both aspects of the Proverb โ€“ because within a city or any metropolitan area like that โ€“ both the wealthy and the poor live within yards of each other.  Artificial insulation deceives the dwellers into thinking that all is well.  The wealthy thinks his high tower protects him, and the poor thinks the system will protect him.  And it doesnโ€™t only apply to cities โ€“ think of the wealthy plantations in the South before the Civil War.  They were micro-complexes of supra-independence.  But many of them were razed and burned to the ground โ€“ lock, stock, and barrel.

the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

Do people trust in poverty?  Absolutely!  It is the same assumption that the wealthy make โ€“ trusting in the world.  Content to let others care for them โ€“ the poor will end in destruction says the Proverb.

Please look at verse 8 above โ€“ putting confidence in man โ€“ includes yourself!  V. 9 โ€“ putting confidence in princes is the same as putting confidence in politicians.

For the Lordโ€™s Day โ€“ Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee

Henry Van Dyke  1852-1933

โ€œThe Hymn of Joyโ€œ[1] (often called โ€œJoyful, Joyful We Adore Theeโ€ after the first line) is a poem written by Henry van Dyke in 1907 with the intention of musically setting it to the famous โ€œOde to Joyโ€ melody of the final movement of Ludwig van Beethovenโ€˜s final symphony, Symphony No. 9.[2]

Van Dyke wrote this poem in 1907 while staying at the home of Williams College president Harry Augustus Garfield. He was serving as a guest preacher at Williams at the time. He told his host that the local Berkshire Mountains had been his inspiration.[3] The lyrics were first published in 1911 in Van Dykeโ€™s Book of Poems, Third Edition.[3]

Van Dyke wrote of this hymn:

These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feelings and desires in this present timeโ€”hymns of today that may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy religion, or any revolution on earth overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and joy and hope.

โ€œThis hymn is generally considered by hymnologists to be one of the most joyous expressions of hymn lyrics in the English language.โ€

Friday Proverb โ€“ Complicity and Foolishness

ย He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow:

turning a blind eye

In the true understanding of the 1611 KJV, โ€œwinketh with the eye,โ€ quite literally means โ€œturning a blind eye.โ€  This is something that everyone is guilty of, including Christians.  We need to speak up, not sit on our hands!  Just the fact that Christians as a whole have been cowed into passivity in the past does not mean we need to let it continue.  If you see something that is wrong โ€“ speak out!  Yes โ€“ especially if it is in your church. . .

God has โ€œturned a blind eyeโ€ intentionally to the worldโ€™s free-fall into utter depravity, but He will not always do so!

but a prating fool shall fall.

talk too much

We all know them, even at church.  Give them a mic and they never want to let go.  I am saying this as kindly as possible to my brothers and sisters โ€“ listening is a great gift that every believer should try to cultivate within themselves.  Letโ€™s not think about ourselves, but let us always have in mind the well-being of others.  Many times, the well being of others involves listening to them with hearing, understanding and compassion.  The less time we spend thinking and talking about ourselves, the more time we will have for others and even more importantly The LORD, and the more  filled and empowered with the Holy Spirit we will be.

Friday Proverb โ€“ The Wicked Will Not Always Prosper

As wickedness grows apace in this world, believers sometimes wonder longingly when the LORD will call them home.  The Word of God is implicitly clear โ€“ He is keeping track โ€“ and He will hold all accountable.

Jesus healing blind

ย Blessings are upon theย headย of theย just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

It is extremely important to understand the meaning of the word โ€œjustโ€ in the first section of this Proverb.  Who are the just?  Those who seek after righteousness through saving faith in Godโ€™s Christ!  No one can be just on their own โ€“ because no one can obtain their own righteousness.  And Who is our Head?  Jesus Christ of course!

The second part of this Proverb is sad indeed.  We see the wicked prospering in the world, and it โ€œvexes our souls,โ€ as it should!  But look closely at that verse โ€“ and you will see it says something far more than most think it does.  โ€œViolence covereth the mouth of the wicked.โ€  Picture this, because this is what the Word is saying โ€“ the unrepentant will NOT be able to answer when the charges are brought against them at the Great White Throne Judgment!  Their mouths will be โ€œcovered with violence.โ€  There will be no pleading or bargaining involved, such as the courts of law hold today.  No negotiating โ€“ no reduced sentences โ€“ no parole. . .no purgatory!

Do not think this is some cruel fate โ€“ you have had ample time to repent, and the Lord is not willing that any should perish.  Now is the time โ€“ not next year, or in a couple of years after you get done โ€œliving your life.โ€  The time is never going to get better than right this minute.  Turn to Jesus Christ, your Creator and Savior, please do it now because you may not get the chance later.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Those Lazy Days of Summer

The ease with which food can be procured in this country, gives us a false sense of security.  The entitlement syndrome has left the populace with the idea that they are owed something.  Food, clothing, shelter, education โ€“ all are deemed โ€œrightsโ€ by a sinful and lazy flock of sheeple.  The evil shepherd of our nation, is placed in judgment over us โ€“ as we demand more and more โ€“ the evil shepherd promises more and more.  And leads the lazy sheeple to slaughter.

grasshopper and ant

ย He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

You need not be involved in agriculture to make a life application out of this particular Proverb.  Allow me to give a personal example of how I use it it, and have ignored,  it to my great discomfort.

Living in the Great Lakes area guarantees mercurial weather.  Thanks to John Coleman, we have the blessings of the Weather Channel, and are able to chart the weather for more than one day.  In times past, when looking at the weather, there might have been in winter time, a one or two day window biweekly, where the weather was more amenable to driving (ergo โ€“ safer and less stressful.)  Did I wisely take advantage of this window?  I am ashamed to say that I did not always do so โ€“ and found my family on several occasions having to go without some things for days before it was safe to drive again.  Shameful and lazy!

When we have plenty, we tend to take it for granted โ€“ just as the ancient Hebrews did . . .

If you think about it honestly โ€“ do you really thing about where your water is coming from?ย  How about your clothing?ย  Do you thank God for every bite of food that goes into your mouth โ€“ or do you wish you had something better?ย  How about your shelter? Clothing?ย  Do you take care of and give thanks for what you have?ย  Can you do better at working for the comfort and safety of your loved ones?ย  This could even be applied to shoveling the snow off the roof, sidewalk or driveway โ€“ย beforeย the ice storm!ย  Or if you live in an arid region โ€“ putting out the rain barrels before the rainy season!ย  Youโ€™d be surprised how many people put off these things when it is the best time to do them โ€“ because of electronic distractions/addictionsย  โ€“ like TV, internet, and telephone.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Working Hard? or Hardly Working?

hardly working

He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

detroit-teachers-rally

Homemakers โ€“ do you have laundry and dishes piled up?  Are you allowing food to go to waste?  Are you shopping with care and thrift?  If not โ€“ then you are dealing with a slack hand.

Hourly worker โ€“ are you frittering away time when you could be getting things done?  Do you spend time thinking about how the managers arenโ€™t working as hard as you are?  Do you help yourself to things at your place of work because everyone else does it?  Then you are dealing with a slack hand.

CEO โ€“ do you spend hours at the golf course now that youโ€™ve โ€œmade it?โ€  Do you take advantage of tax exemptions to make your life more cushy with โ€œbusiness expensesโ€ that arenโ€™t really business expenses?  Do you take advantage of underlings?  Then you are dealing with a slack hand.

Please see the studies on the Rewards of Crowns on ourย apologetics pageย to see where and how, you, beloveds, will be truly rewarded for your diligence.

11ย Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

12ย Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

13ย Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lordโ€™s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

14ย Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

15ย For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

16ย As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

17ย Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Ill Gotten Gains

Some would look at this illustration and think it belongs to another, โ€œless civilizedโ€ era.  Mankind has not changed, just the dressings have.  There are more that will deceive and take advantage of others, than there are that wonโ€™t.  We all need to be very circumspect in this matter.  Even pocketing extra change mistakenly given to you by a cashier constitutes as a โ€œtreasure of wickedness.โ€ There may be some people who seem to be โ€œgetting away with it,โ€ but they will be judged.  Perhaps not in this life, but definitely in the next.

rapture23

Not deliverance physical death, perhaps, but deliverance from eternal death in the Lake of Fire โ€“ yes.  Only those who have admitted their sinfulness, and turned towards Jesus Christ and asked Him into their hearts are considered righteous.  In Godโ€™s eyes there are only two kinds of people in the world โ€“ sheep and goats โ€“ or โ€“ saved and unsaved.

31ย When the Son of man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory:

32ย And before Him shall be gathered all nations: and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

judgment of the nations

33ย And He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

Proverbs 6:20-35

Instruction from godly parents is to be integral to the young Christian.  Holding tightly to such counsel, will be a boon to resisting the world, the flesh, and the devil!

Often people blame the man in instances of adultery.  Certainly โ€“ in cases where the female is underage, he is 100% responsible.  But โ€“ in the sin of two adults โ€“ both are responsible.  Women who pursue married men are considered whores in the Bible.  Not long ago in our culture โ€“ women who did such things were called home-wreckers.  Now they are glorified in the media,  and money is thrown at them for their evil doings.

The Proverb summarizes in the next six verse, by comparing adultery to stealing bread.  If one steals because he is starving, it is more easily forgiven.  If one steals when one has plenty โ€“ it is deserving of revenge.
