Friday Proverb โ€“ Words Can Feed Souls

pharisee and the publican

Proverbs 10:20-21

20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver:the heart of the wicked is little worth.

21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Hold Your Tongue!

Proverbs 10:18-19

gossiping

Wow!  Hiding hatred with lying lips. . .  how awful.  But itโ€™s all too true.  We comfort ourselves by sugar coating what we are doing, thinking we are not hurting anyone, but it puts us in the category of fool no matter what the reason.  Cutting up someoneโ€™s appearance, children, marriage โ€“ whatever โ€“ is nothing more than slander.  If itโ€™s not something you can say directly to the person โ€“ then  do not say it!  This includes tearing apart the pastorโ€™s sermon in the car on the way home from church.  Repeating something youโ€™ve heard is a dangerous and shameful practice.  So is embellishing and exaggerating something that may be true in order to make it more interesting to your listeners.

talk too much

Did you realize that the more you talk, there is more chance of you saying something wrong?  The odds are against you.  Those who run-off at the mouth, are notorious for putting their foot in that same mouth.  Even when you are not talking about yourself (which most talkers do) you are still feeding your ego, by holding your listener(s)  hostage.  Parents โ€“ this includes lecturing of your children or spouse.  Less is more in this case, and in every case.  The longer your spiel โ€“ the greater chance you will sin, and sin big, during the overflow.

Friday Proverb โ€“ In One Ear And Out The Other?

For the Lord’s Day – All People That On Earth Do Dwell

Hymn Story

All People That on Earth Do Dwell

Psalm 100ย

ย Make a joyful noise unto theย Lord, all ye lands.

2ย Serve theย Lordย with gladness: come before His presence with singing.

3ย Know ye that theย Lordย He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

4ย Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.

5ย For theย Lordย is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations.

p.s.  I post this as part of my continuous effort to point up the dangers of CCM, and hope and pray that Godโ€™s people will wake up to the serpent in the singing.  Can you see what is being lost as the old hymns are cast aside for simple lyrics and rhythmic melodies?  CCM  is now firmly in IFB churches everywhere.

2 Timothy 4:3

Friday Proverb โ€“ Speak Softly and Carry a Big Bible!

fish and wisdom

Proverbs 10:31-32

31ย The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

Recalling that only those who are under the Blood of Christ are considered โ€œjustโ€ by God โ€“ it does not bode well for those who have a froward tongue!

adjective: froward

  1. (of a person) difficult to deal with; contrary.

In point of fact โ€“ our blessed Redeemer made mention of this very thing, while He was here in the flesh:

Matthew 12:36

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

32ย The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

How do we know what is โ€œacceptable?โ€  By reading, studying, and memorizing the Word of God.  Being a Christian does not automatically cause you to speak with wisdom!  This kind of righteousness comes only with having the mind of Christ, and making His thoughts and Words a part of you.  And to prove that our own words can not count as wisdom, we look to our Savior once again, and see how He responded to the Devil during the temptation.

Matthew 4:3-10

And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Notice that the Lord ONLY used Scripture to respond to the Devil.  This is especially important for those Christians who somehow think the Old Testament no longer has meaning or importance to the Church!  If the Living Christ thought it was important enough to quote โ€“ how are Christians confident in not doing so as well?  Are we responding to temptation with our own logic and reason?  Are we foolish enough to think that our own resources can outfox the Fox?  The Devil?  The Tempter?  This one thing โ€“ failing to use the Word of God against temptation โ€“ is the greatest weakness of the Church.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Our Life and Hope

The fear of theย Lordย prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.ย

The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.ย

James 4:14

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even aย vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Friday Proverb โ€“ The Wicked Fear Death

Isaiah 65:11-17

For the Lordโ€™s Day โ€“ If You Will Only Let God Guide You

Winkworthโ€™s original translation:

winkworth_c

If thou but suffer God to guide thee
And hope in Him through all thy ways,
Heโ€™ll give thee strength, whateโ€™er betide thee,
And bear thee through the evil days.
Who trust in Godโ€™s unchanging love
Builds on the rock that naught can move.

What can these anxious cares avail thee
These never ceasing moans and sighs?
What can it help if thou bewail thee
Oโ€™er each dark moment as it flies?
Our cross and trials do but press
The heavier for our bitterness.

Be patient and await His leisure
In cheerful hope, with heart content
To take whatever thy Fatherโ€™s pleasure
And His discerning love hath sent,
Nor doubt our inmost want are known
To Him who chose us for His own.

God knows full well when time of gladness
Shall be the needful thing for thee.
When He has tried thy soul with sadness
And from all guile has found thee free,
He comes to thee all unaware
And makes thee own His loving care.

Nor think amid the fiery trial
That God hath cast thee off unheard,
That he whose hopes meet no denial
Must surely be of God preferred.
Time passes and much change doth bring
And set a bound to everything.

All are alike before the Highest:
โ€™Tis easy for our God, We know,
To raise thee up, though low thou liest,
To make the rich man poor and low.
True wonders still by Him are wrought
Who setteth up and brings to naught.

Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving,
Perform thy duties faithfully,
And trust His Word: though undeserving,
Thou yet shalt find it true for thee.
God never yet forsook in need
The soul that trusted Him indeed.

http://cyberhymnal.org/htm/i/f/ifyouwil.htm

Things appeared desperate for Georg Neumark. Walking cross country in the early Autumn of 1641 to begin his studies at the University of Konigsberg, the young German scholar was robbed of virtually everything he owned. With no money left to pay for food or classes, George had to drop out of college and look for work. He was hungry, poorly clothed, forced to take whatever shelter he could find as the cold weather came on.

He went back to Magdeburg but could find no work there. However, he made friends easily, and they pointed him to different cities. But he had no more success in the next three cities he tried: Luneburg, Winsen or Hamburg. He passed on to Keil. The chief pastor of Keil, Nicolaus Becker took an interest in Georg. Like Georg, he was from Thuringia. However, he could find him no immediate work. It was now December. What was Georg to do?

At this darkest moment, a miracle happened. A tutor in a prominent family fell into disgrace and fled. Nicolaus Becker recommended Georg for the position and he was hired. Georgโ€™s response was to burst into a hymn of praise, โ€œon that very day.โ€

If thou but suffer God to guide thee
And hope in Him through all thy ways,
Heโ€™ll give thee strength, whateโ€™er betide thee,
And bear thee through the evil daysโ€ฆ.
Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving,
Perform thy duties faithfully,
And trust His Word: though undeserving,
Thou yet shalt find it true for thee.
God never yet forsook in need
The soul that trusted Him indeed.

We remember George Neumark mainly because of that one hymn and the tune he composed for it. For two years he worked and saved his money, finally getting together enough to enter University. In 1646 he again lost everything he owned, this time to a fire.

However, he was able to complete his studies and return to his homeland. There Duke Wilhelm II of Sachse-Weimar recognized his merits and gave him a trusted position.

Georg went blind shortly before he died, but the court allowed him to keep his jobs with their badly-needed income right to the end. He died on this day, July 18, 1681, having turned 60 shortly before. He had performed his part faithfully and God did not forsake him, bearing him through the evil days.

Friday Proverb โ€“ What Do You Trust In?

ย The rich manโ€™s wealth is his strong city:

destruction of city

This image applies to both aspects of the Proverb โ€“ because within a city or any metropolitan area like that โ€“ both the wealthy and the poor live within yards of each other.  Artificial insulation deceives the dwellers into thinking that all is well.  The wealthy thinks his high tower protects him, and the poor thinks the system will protect him.  And it doesnโ€™t only apply to cities โ€“ think of the wealthy plantations in the South before the Civil War.  They were micro-complexes of supra-independence.  But many of them were razed and burned to the ground โ€“ lock, stock, and barrel.

the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

Do people trust in poverty?  Absolutely!  It is the same assumption that the wealthy make โ€“ trusting in the world.  Content to let others care for them โ€“ the poor will end in destruction says the Proverb.

Please look at verse 8 above โ€“ putting confidence in man โ€“ includes yourself!  V. 9 โ€“ putting confidence in princes is the same as putting confidence in politicians.

For the Lordโ€™s Day โ€“ O For a Thousand Tongues

Charles Wesley 1739

Wesley wrote this hymn to comยญmemยญoยญrate the first anยญniยญverยญsaยญry of his conยญverยญsion to Christ. This orยญiยญgin is reยญflectยญed in the lyrยญics, โ€œOn this glad day the glorยญiยญous Sun of Rightยญeousยญness arose.โ€ The stanza that beยญgins โ€œO for a thouยญsand tongues to singโ€ is verse seven of Wesยญleyโ€™s origยญinยญal poยญem. This work first apยญpeared in Hymns and Sacยญred Poยญems in 1740.

The majestic music for this breathtaking hymn was composed by Carl Glaser, 1828.

Psalm 35:27-28

27ย Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let theย Lordย be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.

28ย And my tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.

Psalm 119:171-173

171ย My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes.

172ย My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.

173ย Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts.

For the Lordโ€™s Day โ€“ My Faith Looks Up to Thee

Words: Ray Palยญmer, 1830.

Ray Palmer wrote these lyrยญics upยญon reยญceivยญing a viยญsion of Christ shortยญly afยญter his gradยญuยญaยญtion from Yale Unยญiยญverยญsiยญty, while workยญing as a tuยญtor at a New York school. Howยญevยญer, he kept them to himยญself unยญtil meetยญing Lowยญell Maยญson on a street in Bosยญton, Masยญsacยญhuยญsetts. When Maยญson asked him to write someยญthing for a new hymnยญal, Palmยญer dug out his old notes and proยญduced these lyrยญics, writยญten two years earยญliยญer. Afยญter takยญing the lyrยญics home and readยญing them, Maยญson comยญposed this tune. Sevยญerยญal days latยญer he saw Palmยญer again and said:

An interesting story conยญnectยญed with this hymn:

Mrs. Layยญyah Barยญaยญkat, a naยญtive of Syrยญia, was edยญuยญcatยญed in Beiยญrut and then taught for a time in Egypt. Drivยญen out in 1882 by the inยญsurยญrectยญion of Araยญbi Paยญsha, she, with her husยญband and child, came to Amerยญiยญca by way of Malยญta and Marยญseilles. Her hisยญtoยญry is a strange ilยญlusยญtraยญtion of Godโ€™s proยญviยญdenยญtial care, as they were withยญout any diยญrectยญion or friends in Philยญaยญdelยญphia when they landยญed. But the Lord took them into His own keepยญing, and brought them to those who had known of her in Syrยญia. While in this counยญtry she freยญquentยญly adยญdressed large auยญdiยญencยญes, to whom her deep earยญnestยญness and brokยญen but piยญquant Engยญlish proved unยญuยญsuยญalยญly atยญtractยญive. Among other inยญciยญdents she reยญlatยญed that she had been perยญmitยญted to see the conยญverยญsion of her whole famยญiยญly, who were Marยญoยญnites of Mount Leยญbaยญnon. Her mother, sixยญty-two years of age, had been taught โ€˜My Faith Looks Up to Theeโ€™ in Arยญaยญbic. They would sit on the house roof and reยญpeat it toยญgeยญther; and when the news came back to Syrยญia that the daughยญter was safe in Amerยญiยญca, the moยญther could send her no betยญter proof of her faith and love than in the beauยญtiยญful words of this hymn, asยญsurยญing her that her faith still looked up to Christ.

Ephesians 3:12

In Whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of Him.

โ€œThe words for these stanzas were born out of my own soul with very little effort. I recall that 1 wrote the verses with tender emotion. . . . When writing the last line, โ€œO bear me safe above, a ransomed soul!โ€ the thought that the whole work of redemption and salvation was involved in those words. . . brought me to a degree of emotion that brought abundant tears.โ€

Friday Proverb โ€“ Love People, Hate Sin

Hatred stirreth up strifes:

westboro baptist church

The infamous Westboro Baptist Church perfectly typifies this Proverb.  Their hatred has consumed them, and causes people outside the faith to make assumptions about others who carry the name of Baptist.  Hatred blinds us to the Truth โ€“ the Truth of the Gospel, which includes the truth of our own sin.  Hatred causes families to fall apart, and continuous strife between people for every reason under the sun.  If there is no forgiveness โ€“ there is hatred, resentment, bitterness, and misery.  Often lasting a lifetime.

Do you have someone you hate?  Perhaps you were abused or neglected, and have good reason.  But the hatred and bitterness you hold for that person or people, will eat away inside you, causing internal strife โ€“ and stealing your inner peace.

but love covereth all sins.

holding hands

Wow.  Take a good long look at the above picture.  That is an aged parent and adult child clasping hands.  It isnโ€™t always a parent that has hurt us โ€“ sometimes itโ€™s a sibling, neighbor, employer, teacher, friend, spouse,  religious leader, peers, coworker, some corrupt entity or other . . .  no matter what the source โ€“ the resentment and hatred is the same.  It could be something like a  visceral hatred of the government โ€“ to the girl who made fun of you in 7th grade.   Only when you let that go โ€“ and allow yourself to forgive (weโ€™re not saying you will forget) and  stop holding so tightly to the hatred that is sustaining  you  โ€“  can you experience the Perfect Love that covereth all sins.

You canโ€™t do it on your own, pray to Him for help, and He will relieve you of that burden.  Once you are relieved of that terrible canker eating away at you, you will feel the covering of that sin like a soothing blanket, and the terror and anguish and hatred of whoever or whatever was the recipient of that hatred (deserving or not) will fade away like yesterdays clouds on a sunny day.

forgiveness

If you do not forgive โ€“ your unforgiveness will grow and fester into hate.

Let His perfect love cast out that resentment, and feel the freedom of His perfect love.  Love does not require you to become someoneโ€™s doormat โ€“ love frees you from hatred.  Your view will change โ€“ and you will see the the person you hated โ€“ as a miserable sinner who needs salvation.  Suddenly, things that seemed really important will diminish, and the Gospel and the sharing of it, will become what is most important to you.

Friday Proverb โ€“ Complicity and Foolishness

ย He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow:

turning a blind eye

In the true understanding of the 1611 KJV, โ€œwinketh with the eye,โ€ quite literally means โ€œturning a blind eye.โ€  This is something that everyone is guilty of, including Christians.  We need to speak up, not sit on our hands!  Just the fact that Christians as a whole have been cowed into passivity in the past does not mean we need to let it continue.  If you see something that is wrong โ€“ speak out!  Yes โ€“ especially if it is in your church. . .

God has โ€œturned a blind eyeโ€ intentionally to the worldโ€™s free-fall into utter depravity, but He will not always do so!

but a prating fool shall fall.

talk too much

We all know them, even at church.  Give them a mic and they never want to let go.  I am saying this as kindly as possible to my brothers and sisters โ€“ listening is a great gift that every believer should try to cultivate within themselves.  Letโ€™s not think about ourselves, but let us always have in mind the well-being of others.  Many times, the well being of others involves listening to them with hearing, understanding and compassion.  The less time we spend thinking and talking about ourselves, the more time we will have for others and even more importantly The LORD, and the more  filled and empowered with the Holy Spirit we will be.

The Keepers of His Word

Bible translations โ€“ itโ€™s a mess. If you are anything like me (logical, analytical, likes to read peer-reviewed research for *fun* on the weekends), the confusion surrounding Biblical translations seems to almost invalidate the Bible as a whole. To an external observer with a penchant towards experimental and evidence-based analysis, contradicting results invalidates the authority of the results. Due to the conflicting views on translations of Scripture, I am working to assemble my research to validate the authority of the Scripture in terms of the Authorized King James Version.

All of the unified religions established as the official religion of the Roman Empire were called, as a unit, Roman Catholicism. In an effort to unify Christianity and people who had pantheistic views for peace under his โ€œdivine leadership,โ€ Constantine played his role carefully after analyzing that the Christians would not be so easily eliminated with simple persecution and massacre as was attempted during the reign of prior Emperor Diocletian and his Tetrarchy. Roman Catholicism embellished Christianity with ritualistic ceremonies, focusing on the value and authority of paganist rituals and ceremony as opposed to the authority of Scripture. Thus, any Scripture which was derived from the influence of that intermingling of Gnosticism, paganism and Arianism that was the result of Constantineโ€™s efforts for a unified religion (Roman Catholicism) and any translation of Scripture which stemmed from that unification and desperate attempt to unite the pagans of the world with Christians uses a translation that:

Most English Translations of Scripture come from copies of Greek codices of questionable translational authenticity kept in โ€œthe holy city of Catholicsโ€ โ€“ Vatican City.

Friday Proverb โ€“ How Well Do We Receive Instruction?

James 1:5

Todayโ€™s Proverb demonstrates the stark contrast between the wise  and foolish.

How much do you love the Word of God?  Do you put it aside for sports, soap operas, or other worldly pursuits?  How do you feel about Bible Doctrine?  Do you find it wearying?  Or edifying?  Do you think you know all there is to know about Bible doctrine?  Or do you feel you could spend your whole lifetime studying the Word and still never know it all?  This discussion brings to my mind a rather infamous intellectual, who is completely devoid of wisdom:

For the Lordโ€™s Day โ€“ Under His Wings

If $100,000 was your whole life savings, would you give every penny of it to someone in need? William O. Cushing did something like that. In the nineteenth century, when $1,000 was a lot of money, he gave his entire life savings to pay for the education of a blind girl.

That is not what he is remembered for, however. His fame is as a hymnwriter. One of his earliest hymns was the song, โ€œWhen He Cometh,โ€ which compared Christians to jewels whom Christ would gather when he came. Other notable hymns were written after he had experienced great grief and loss. But that is getting ahead of the story.

William Orcutt Cushing was born in Hingham, Massachusetts on this date, December 31, 1823. His parents raised him as a Universalist, but by reading the Bible for himself as a teenager, he became an orthodox believer. At eighteen he was convinced the Lord wanted him to become a minister and he trained for it.

His first pastorate was at Searsburg, New York. There he met and married Rena Proper in 1854 (which was also the year he wrote โ€œWhen He Comethโ€). After that he served in Auburn, Brooklyn, Buffalo and Sparta, New York. With the decline of his wifeโ€™s health, William returned with her to Searsburg where she died in 1870.

After that, โ€œcreeping paralysisโ€ stole his voice and prevented him from preaching any longer. He pleaded with the Lord to allow him to continue to serve in some capacity.

His prayer was granted. He wrote over 300 hymns. Some of these are still beloved by the church. โ€œFollow onโ€ was written in 1878 to a tune by Robert Lowry. โ€œFollow, follow, I will follow Jesus; anywhere, everywhereโ€ฆโ€ it promises. โ€œUnder His Wings,โ€ printed and sung by Ira Sankey, sprang out of Cushingโ€™s personal suffering and was suggested by Psalm 17:8, โ€œHide me under the shadow of your wings.โ€ Another of his famous hymns โ€œRing the Bells of Heavenโ€ was written before his deep troubles had descended upon him. Composer George F. Root had sent him the tune. Cushing felt it needed joyful words and mused on it all day before the words came to him.

Cushing died in 1902 but his songs live on.

Instruction from godly parents is to be integral to the young Christian.  Holding tightly to such counsel, will be a boon to resisting the world, the flesh, and the devil!

major loser

Often people blame the man in instances of adultery.  Certainly โ€“ in cases where the female is underage, he is 100% responsible.  But โ€“ in the sin of two adults โ€“ both are responsible.  Women who pursue married men are considered whores in the Bible.  Not long ago in our culture โ€“ women who did such things were called home-wreckers.  Now they are glorified in the media,  and money is thrown at them for their evil doings.

The Proverb summarizes in the next six verse, by comparing adultery to stealing bread.  If one steals because he is starving, it is more easily forgiven.  If one steals when one has plenty โ€“ it is deserving of revenge.

For the Lordโ€™s Day โ€“ Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

Anthony Showalter was leading a singing school in an Alabama church in 1887. When he returned to his boardinghouse room one night, two letters awaited him. Both were from former students, and both men told of the recent loss of their wives. Mr. Showalter wrote back, seeking to comfort the young men in the midst of their grief. But what to write? When he came to the end of each letter, he wanted to include a Bible verse. He picked Deuteronomy 33:27, โ€œThe eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms โ€ฆ.โ€

He pondered the words of that verse as he penned them into the letters, and the lyrics of the chorus of Leaning on the Everlasting Arms came to his mind. He wrote to his friend, Elisha Hoffman, explaining that he had a chorus, but no verses. Mr. Hoffman wrote back with the rest of the words of this famous hymn.

Sam Duncan, a student and nephew of Mr. Showalter, was given the class assignment to write the tune for this poem. The piece was published under his uncleโ€™s name in the book Glad Evangel for Revival, Camp and Evangelistic Meeting Hymnal.

The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and He shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

Revelation 19:11-16

11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.

12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns; and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He Himself.

13 And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His name is called The Word of God.

14 And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

15 And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and He treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

16 And He hath on his vesture and on His thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.

Isnโ€™t He AWESOME?

Proverbs 6:1-5

King James Version (KJV)

This has to do with making promises  to others in terms of financial debt.  Either involving yourself in a venture on behalf of your own interest, or someone else (like a family member or friend as in co-signing) is against The LORDโ€™s perfect will.  Even personal mortgages are immoral in this respect โ€“ because you are purchasing something that you may not be able to repay.  By signing a contract such as that you have โ€“ โ€œstricken hands with a strangerโ€ (a bank or lending institution.)  As every person is aware of in this country and around the word โ€“ banks do not think twice about ejecting you from the house or car โ€“ because technically โ€“ you never owned them to begin with.  It was always the banksโ€™ โ€“ unless and until you pay it in entirety.

v.2 โ€“ you said it โ€“ you own it!

debt

The LORD says โ€“ do not rest until you have cleared up the debt!

Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

The purveyors of debt are likened here to a hunter!  As hunters are wont to do โ€“ they set traps โ€“ and foolish prey step into them.

[what is being discussed here is personal debt โ€“ not business]

By Dave Ramsey

Myth: Debt is a tool and should be used to help create prosperity.
Truth: Debt isnโ€™t used by wealthy people nearly as much as we are led to believe.

Debt is dumb. Most normal people are just plain broke because they are in debt up to their eyeballs with no hope of help. If youโ€™re in debt, then youโ€™re a slave because you do not have the freedom to use your money to help change your family tree.

According to a USA Today article about debt, 78% of Baby Boomers have mortgage debt, 59% have credit card debt, and 56% have car payments. It takes a lot of will, discipline, courage and help to slay the debt monster. But it can be done. Imagine how much you could put toward retirement if you just didnโ€™t have a stinking car payment? This is how the wealthy really build their wealth. Debt is dumb. Welcome to the real world!

Consider the Risk

My contention is that debt brings on enough risk to offset any advantage that could be gained through leverage of debt. Given timeโ€”a lifetimeโ€”risk will destroy the perceived returns purported by the myth-sayers. I once was a myth-sayer myself and could repeat the myths very convincingly. I was especially good with the โ€œdebt is a toolโ€ myth. I even sold rental property that was losing money to investors by showing them, with very sophisticated internal rates of return, how they would actually make money!

For the Lordโ€™s Day โ€“ Beyond the Sunset

Virgil Prentiss Brock โ€“ Lyrics  1887-1978

Born: January 6, 1887, Mercer County, Ohio.
Buried: Warsaw, Indiana.

Blanche Kerr Brock โ€“ Composer  1888-1958

Born: February 3, 1888, Greens Fork, Indiana.
Died: January 3, 1958, Winona Lake, Indiana.
Buried: Warsaw, Indiana.

One of the best-known and widely-used songs in the entire field of gospel hymnody is โ€œBeyond the Sunset.โ€ Mr. Brock has left the following account of its writing:

This song was born during a conversation at the dinner table, one evening in 1936, after watching a very unusual sunset at Winona Lake Indiana, with a blind guestโ€”my cousin Horace Burrโ€”and his wife Grace. A large area of the water appeared ablaze with the glory of God, yet there were threatening storm clouds gathering overhead. Returning to our home, we went to the dinner table still talking about the impressive spectacle we had witnessed. Our blind guest excitedly remarked the he had never seen a more beautiful sunset.

โ€œPeople are always amazed when you talk about seeing,โ€ I told him, โ€œI can see,โ€ Horace replied. โ€œI see through other peoples eyes, and think I often see more; I see beyond the sunset.โ€

The phrase โ€œbeyond the sunsetโ€ and the striking inflection of his voice struck me so forcibly, I began singing the first few measures. โ€œThatโ€™s beautiful!โ€ his wife interrupted, โ€œPlease go to the piano and sing it.

We went to the piano nearby and completed the first verse. โ€œYou should have a verse about the storm clouds,โ€ our guest urged, and the words for this verse came quickly as well. Recalling how closely our guest had walked hand in hand together for so many years due to his blindness, the third verse was soon added. Before the evening meal was finished, all four stanzas had been written and we sang the entire song together.

Revelation 21:4

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

The Abundant Life โ€“ #4 โ€“ The Spirit Filled Life

John 3:3-7

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his motherโ€™s womb, and be born?

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7ย Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Ephesians 5:18

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit

Living Water

John 4:14

But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
